Understand the material

24 properties.
An evidence-based view.

Explore the characteristics and functions of the BLC platform. Each topic distinguishes measurements, modelling and items requiring application-specific qualification.

From laboratory result to real-world use.

Historical results concern specific mixes and samples. This list is not a set of 24 certifications and does not replace project design.

24 topics displayed

01Measured

Low density

584 kg/m³ fresh, 559 kg/m³ dry and 626 kg/m³ after immersion. Design weight depends on service moisture conditions.

02Measured

Integrated thermal insulation

Thermal conductivity of 0.16910 W/(m·K) at a mean temperature of 24.02 °C. RSI of approximately 1.18 m²·K/W at 200 mm is calculated from the dry measurement, not directly tested at that thickness.

Source and scope R2
03Measured

Targeted mechanical strength

Compressive strength: 3.9 MPa at 28 days and 4.6 MPa at 56 days on the historical mix. These results inform assessment; design strength must be established for the project.

Source and scope R1
04Measured

Early strength development

2.0 MPa at 24 hours, then 2.6 MPa at 2 days. Curing and temperature matter. A 24-hour result does not authorise traffic or asphalt placement.

05Qualification required

Acoustic performance

To be qualified on the complete assembly, including thicknesses, finishes, floors and junctions. Primary acoustic reports must be matched to the application before a rated performance can be stated.

06Modelled

Installed-cost optimisation

Compare delivered and installed material, preparation, equipment, schedule and maintenance. The 2020 pavement study provides a life-cycle scenario, not a current project price.

07Application potential

Construction simplification

Continuous placement may offer construction advantages. Pumping, access, joints, protection and sequencing must be planned with the producer and applicator.

Source and scope R5
08Measured

Freeze–thaw behaviour

After 300 ASTM C666 Procedure B cycles: relative dynamic modulus of 86.5%. This characterises the tested specimens and cannot be converted into guaranteed years of service.

Source and scope R1
09Application potential

Durability

Freeze–thaw and scaling tests provide favourable evidence within their scope. Service life also depends on water, loading, interfaces and field monitoring.

10Modelled

Environmental performance

A life-cycle assessment compares pavement systems over 30 years. Layer selection, transport and maintenance affect the results. A new application requires its own assessment.

11Measured

Water behaviour

Absorption: 12.0% by mass after immersion and 3.6% by volume using two distinct methods. These results do not establish watertightness or universal hydrophobic behaviour.

Source and scope R1
12Qualification required

Capillarity

Capillary rise and its rate require a specific test protocol. Available absorption values do not replace that test.

13Qualification required

Environmental stability

Behaviour of the complete concrete in contact with water and soil must be documented for the intended use. A constituent data sheet is not a leaching test on the composite.

14Application potential

Buoyancy

Very low density requires assessment of water uplift. The designer considers saturation, cover loads, restraints and possible water levels.

Source and scope R1
15Qualification required

Self-levelling behaviour

Flow and stability must be checked on the delivered mix. A measured slump alone does not qualify the material as self-consolidating concrete.

Source and scope R1
16Qualification required

Fire performance

Reaction to fire and fire resistance must be qualified for the product and assembly. A cementitious matrix alone does not establish a fire rating.

17Qualification required

Mould behaviour

Moisture conditions, surfaces and finishes matter. Mould resistance must be supported by a suitable test.

18Qualification required

Dimensional stability

A length change of 0.020% is reported during freeze–thaw testing. It does not measure drying shrinkage, which requires separate characterisation.

Source and scope R1
19Qualification required

Vibration damping

To be evaluated for the frequencies, supports and constructed system. Static elastic modulus is not a measurement of dynamic damping.

20Application potential

Reduced seismic mass

Reduced non-structural mass can affect inertia forces. The actual effect, anchors and displacements require building-specific design; no seismic-resisting system is claimed here.

Source and scope R1
21Application potential

Precasting potential

Low weight and early strength open options for assessment. Demoulding, lifting, inserts and tolerances must be qualified for each element.

Source and scope R1
22Application potential

Fewer interfaces

Combining functions may simplify an assembly. The bonded asphalt test alone does not justify removing separation or drainage layers.

Source and scope R4
23Application potential

Platform versatility

Buildings, pavement insulation, fills and precasting are application families to assess separately. Evidence for one use does not automatically transfer to another.

Source and scope R5
24Qualification required

Fibres and reinforcement

Compatibility with fibres, reinforcement and anchors depends on the mix and use. Bond, corrosion and element behaviour must be verified.
